“Steps of the Devil” Denial of Women’s and Girls’ Rights to Sport in Saudi Arabia

This report documents discrimination by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Education in denying girls physical education in state schools, as well as discriminatory practices by the General Presidency for Youth Welfare, a youth and sports ministry, in licensing women’s gyms and supporting only all-male sports clubs. The National Olympic Committee of Saudi Arabia also has no programs for women athletes and has not fielded women in past Olympic Games.

The Missing Link: A Joined Up Approach to Addressing Harmful Practices in London

This study was commissioned and funded by the Greater London Authority to address a knowledge gap on the needs of black, minority ethnic and refugee (BMER) women experiencing harmful practices (HPs). The specific aim of the study was to provide a document which would help to engage commissioners, funders, policy-makers and frontline practitioners to improve the way London responds to HPs. The study was carried out between December 2010 and March 2011.

Papua New Guinea: VAW, Sorcery-Related Killings, and Forced Evictions

This submission was prepared for the Universal Periodic Review of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in May 2011. In this, Amnesty International expresses concern at PNG’s poor reporting record under human rights treaties to which it is a party, the absence of a national human rights institution, widespread discrimination and violence against women, which prevail in a culture of silence and patriarchal attitudes, as well as forced evictions and the failure to curb unlawful sorcery-related killings.
